Uganda’s rhino conservation efforts reached a historic milestone in 2025 with the announcement of the country’s inaugural Rhino Naming Ceremony, scheduled for September 22 at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Nakasongola. The event anchors the ambitious USD 11 million “Name a Rhino” campaign, aimed at habitat protection, population growth, and eco-tourism development.
Key Details
Symbolic and Tangible Support: Individuals, corporates, and philanthropists can symbolically adopt and name rhino calves, with proceeds funding veterinary care, anti-poaching, and habitat expansion.
Population Success: From extinction in the wild in the 1980s to 48 rhinos (46 at Ziwa), thanks to dedicated breeding and community conservation efforts since 2006.
Regional Tourism Link: Plans to translocate rhinos into Ajai Wildlife Reserve in West Nile aim to integrate new regions into Uganda’s wildlife tourism circuit and foster local economic growth.
Flagship Event: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni will preside over the naming ceremony, promising international visibility and engagement.
